Emergency kit: preparing for emergencies

Emmelie Duchain-Flecken

Are you prepared for an emergency? And do you know what an emergency kit contains? It is not mandatory to have an emergency kit with emergency rations at home. However, it is highly recommended. We will tell you what you need to consider when putting together this kit.

A disaster or calamity often comes unexpectedly.

A severe storm, a power outage or a flood. These are just a few examples of events that can occur unexpectedly. In recent years, international tensions have also arisen, which we hope will subside ‘naturally’.

According to experts, it is realistic to expect a (temporary) interruption in the supply of basic services. These are things we never think about now, but which would be very inconvenient if they no longer worked or were no longer available. In such cases, an emergency kit ensures that you have what you need to survive.

This is what’s in an emergency kit

We have been able to ‘survive’ in the wild for years, and as long as it is voluntary, it can even be fun. However, if the need arises, below are a number of products that will help you get through a few days or weeks when there is an interruption in the supply of utilities. You can store all these items in a waterproof bag, such as a duffel bag. Then place it in a convenient and accessible (preferably high) location. To make it even easier for you, we have put together a few emergency kits.

Lighting, power supply and heating

If there is no electricity or heating, you can quickly feel very uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are simple ways to keep warm and provide light.

  • Batteries
  • Tealights or candles
  • Waterproof packaged matches

Water and food (emergency rations)

In the event of a disaster or emergency, help often arrives within 72 hours. We therefore advise you to have at least three days’ worth of food and drink in your home.

  • Foldable jerry can for storing water
  • Water purification tablets
  • Sealed bottles of water (three litres per person, per three days)

Overig

In addition to warmth, power supply, food and drink, you could also consider the following items for your emergency kit.

  • Whistle (to let the emergency services know where you are)
  • List of important telephone numbers
  • Copies of your passport, ID card or driving licence and your insurance card
  • Personal essential items, such as medication or baby food
  • Spare keys for your house and car

Shelf life of the package

Of course, we hope it will be a long time (or better yet, never) before you need the kit. To ensure that the emergency kit is ready for use, we advise you to regularly check the expiry dates of the food and drink, test whether the torch and radio still work, and check that the batteries and power bank are still full. That way, you will be well prepared for whatever may come!
