Hiking boots
Men's hiking boots come in different varieties. From flexible and light to sturdy and somewhat heavier. Hiking boots are divided into categories, which represent certain types of boots and types of hikes. Below is a brief explanation of the different types and characteristics.Category A
The shoes in category A are light and all-round hiking shoes and leisure shoes for flat terrain, such as forests and asphalt.- Light and flexible hiking shoes.
- Intended for day hikes on good trails.
- Available in a low and a mid-height version.
- The sole is extremely flexible.
Category B
The shoes in category B are so-called trekking shoes. The sole of this B shoe is stiffer than in the previous category. Suitable for mountain walks with light packs. They provide sufficient support and protect the ankles.- Also known as trekking or mountain walking shoes.
- The walking comfort of a sports shoe and the sturdiness of a mountain shoe.
- The sole is stiffer than that of the A shoe.
- The upper is somewhat sturdier than that of the A shoe.
- The high shaft provides support for the ankles.
- Particularly suitable for longer and multi-day hikes with luggage, as long as there is a path.
Category C
Category C includes shoes used for hiking through fairly rough terrain, for which the soles of the previous categories are no longer suitable. The biggest difference with the previous category, besides the much stiffer sole, is the stiffer upper. Ideal for hiking in the mountains at higher altitudes.- Intended for hiking through rough terrain.
- Significantly more robust than the B shoe.
- Suitable for short use with crampons.
- The sole bends only slightly, but is pre-shaped for good roll-off.
Category D
Heavy crampon-compatible shoes with a stiff sole. Specially designed for more demanding climbing in high alpine terrain and for ice climbing. We do not sell this type. It is too heavy for normal (mountain) hiking.- Heavy mountain boots with a stiff sole.
- Mainly used by mountaineers.
