The name The North Face comes from the northern flank: the coldest and most challenging side of a mountain in the Northern Hemisphere. But the story doesn’t start on the mountain, but on a beach in the United States. In 1966, Douglas Tomkins and Kenneth Klopp started a mountaineering shop in North Beach, San Francisco. Two years later, a start was made with its own line of clothing and mountaineering equipment. The brand became more and more famous and started sponsoring expeditions to the farthest corners of the world. This was the start of a tradition with the motto ‘Never Stop Exploring’.
