Maintenance

Axe head:
Apply a thin layer of protective oil after each use. Wipe it regularly from dirt, water and fingerprints. Use a medium to fine file to straighten larger dents or nicks in the blade. The edge can be ground with a medium grinding wheel or stone.

Sheath:
Waxed canvas should never be dry cleaned or machine washed. It can be carefully cleaned by hand. Brush off the loose dirt, rinse the surface with cold water, scrub it gently with a brush and then let it air dry. If stains remain, use a mild soap or saddle soap.

After cleaning, it may be necessary to re-wax waxed canvas. Use a wax conditioner and apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

FAQ
Q: Can the Field Hatchet be fitted with a new handle?
A: Yes. If it is necessary to re-handle the Field Hatchet, simply insert the new handle through the head of the axe. The head should begin to move toward the thicker part of the handle. To adjust the head, turn the axe upside down. While holding the handle, drop the axe from about 30 cm onto a firm surface. After dropping it five or six times, the head will be firmly attached. If the axe is used, the head will continue to expand.

Q: What should I do if the head comes loose?
A: The head of the Field Hatchet can be easily readjusted without special tools. To reset the head, turn the axe upside down. While holding the handle, drop the axe about 30cm onto a firm surface. After dropping it five or six times, the head will be firmly attached. If the axe is used, the head will continue to expand.
